Chennai: Commuters taking the Sterling Road in Nungambakkam, Chennai, are increasingly irritated with the slow movement of vehicles on the stretch, so to say.
The reason for this, according to many, is the ongoing construction of storm water drains (SWD). According to sources, the said work that is underway between Loyola college and Chetpet junction, had commenced in February, but is yet to be completed.
“This is the major cause of the sluggish movement on this road,” says Sarmishta, a regular here. The footpath on this stretch that has been widened, as part of the SWD work, has also added to the existing problems.
“Pedestrians are forced to walk in the middle of the road due to this. This is extremely risky for children and senior citizens,” says Padmini, a resident nearby.
She further adds that the congestion on Sterling Road, being an important junction, affects the adjoining roads such as Nelson Manickam Road, College Road and Valluvar Kottam Road too.
This becomes a major issue, particularly during peak hours, it is learnt. On their part, civic officials have justified the delay by stating that the drains on this stretch are touted to be six feet deep and four feet wide, and hence the time.
They also assured that steps will be taken to complete the same at the earliest.
