Construction work for extending Vanuvampet bridge underway

Chennai: The construction works for widening the bridge at Vanuvampet has begun and it will get completed soon after removing encroachments in the stretch.

The process of widening the Medavakkam main road has been going on for long. First, the stretch between Oil Mill bus stop and Kumaran Theater was completed, center medians were raised in the same stretch, followed by, widening of the road from Kumaran Theater to Madipakkam Koot Road.

Now the small bridge, situated right near the St Jude’s church is being extended on both the sides. An official, who was inspecting the work, said, “These works were started a month ago. The plan is to demolish the existing structure, and reconstruct it after the buildings that have encroached the road, gets removed.”

When asked about the tentative time that the project will take to get completed, he said, “We are not sure. The owners of the buildings that are built in this road, have obtained a stay. That has to be cleared. Also, If there is going to be any rain, the project might get delayed further.”

The official also rued, “there are heaps of garbage under the bridge. Mostly plastic bottles. Clearing these garbage, will consume more time, than demolishing and reconstructing the bridge.”
