Chennai: Gleneagles Global Health City, Chennai successfully completed 32 liver transplants, since September 2018 under the Tamilnadu Chief Ministers Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme.
At an event held at the hospital Wednesday, transplant patients who underwent successful transplantation under the government scheme were honoured in the presence of State Health and Family Welfare Minister C Vijaya Baskar.
Twenty five patients came along with their families to express their gratitude to the Tamilnadu government for initiating such scheme.
According to the WHO report, liver disease is the most common cause of death in India as it affects every 1 in 5 Indians. Liver disease can be caused due to various reasons such as virus (Hep A, B and C), consuming of alcohol, obesity, inherited genetic disease etc which can further lead to liver damage or liver failure. To treat such acute liver failure the only option is liver transplant, a press release from the hospital said.
“I applaud the Tamilnadu Government for nurturing such a novel scheme which is benefiting the underprivileged. Our liver transplant programme is one of the oldest and the most active in India. Since the day we started, we have performed liver transplants for infants, children and adults, focusing on new surgical techniques and quality patient care,” said Gleneagles Global Hospitals founder and chairman Dr K Ravindranath.
