GCC increases fines for improper waste disposal

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced stricter penalties for those who fail to properly segregate waste before disposal. Starting immediately, individuals who do not separate their garbage will face fines increased by 5-10%. Additionally, the fine for dumping waste on public or private properties has surged dramatically from Rs 500 to Rs 5,000.
In response to the ongoing issue of improperly disposed construction and demolition waste, the GCC has also decided to privatize the collection and transportation of this waste to designated sites within the city.
Despite previous efforts to encourage residents to segregate dry and wet waste into separate bins for door-to-door collection, compliance has been low. As a result, the GCC has revised the penalty for individuals from Rs 100 to Rs 1,000. For those residing in apartment complexes, the penalty has been set at Rs 5,000, as outlined in the recent resolution.
The GCC emphasizes the importance of responsible waste management to maintain a clean and sustainable environment in Chennai.
