Governor R.N. Ravi addressed the alarming rise in drug abuse among the youth during a drug prevention and awareness event held at Chennai Women’s Christian College. In his speech, he emphasized the growing menace of drug sales and the destructive impact they have on society.“Today, opportunities are opening up in every direction for women. The number of women graduating with degrees is significantly higher than that of men. In the 1980s, states like the Northeast and Punjab were thriving, especially in agriculture. However, within 30 years, the culture of drug abuse has ravaged these regions,” Governor Ravi stated.
He highlighted the alarming prevalence of illegal drugs, such as cannabis, cocaine, and heroin, in Tamil Nadu. Synthetic drugs have also increasingly enslaved the youth, leading to devastating consequences not just for individuals but for entire families.
Governor Ravi pointed out that those who sell drugs to the youth often create a false image that there is a high demand for these substances. “Their sole intention is to ruin the youth and push the nation backward,” he warned.
The Governor commended the efforts of the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, who have been seizing large quantities of drugs smuggled into coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and other states. He also noted the presence of drug syndicates in Tamil Nadu that are linked to illegal imports from countries in the Middle East and Pakistan. “The economy of Afghanistan largely depends on the money generated from the sale of drugs,” he added.
Governor Ravi stressed that Tamil Nadu is a powerhouse for the nation’s growth, with rich human resources and natural wealth. He warned that some forces are trying to undermine this progress by pushing drugs into society.
He called for increased awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, urging parents to spend quality time with their children. “Only then will they open up about their problems,” he said. The Governor concluded by noting that when India gained independence, it was ranked sixth in the world. After slipping to the 11th position, it has now risen to fifth. “The growth of women is not just individual progress; it is the progress of the nation,” he asserted.
Governor Ravi’s speech highlighted the urgent need for collective efforts to combat drug abuse and ensure a brighter future for the youth and the nation.
