1,929 Tamils stranded abroad due to lockdown return to TN

Chennai: A total of 1,929 people from the State, who were stranded in foreign countries in view of the corona lockdown, have returned to the State so far.

In a statement, while announcing extending the lockdown from today till 31 May to prevent the COVID-19 spread, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said while 1,665 people have returned in 10 flights under the Vande Bharat programme of the Centre, 264 have returned in two ships.

Following the requests made by several stranded people from the State, the Tamilnadu government would coordinate with the Centre and take steps to bring them back to the State.

He also said steps were being taken to bring all those who were locked down in other States, by trains.

Pointing out that Rajdhani express trains were operated twice this week from Delhi to Chennai, Palaniswami said steps would be taken to operate this service twice a week in the coming days with Centre’s consent.
