Chandrayan-2 gets closer to Moon

Chennai: ISRO today performed the third Lunar bound orbit maneuver for Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft at 9.04 am, using the onboard propulsion system.

ISRO tweeted that the duration of the maneuver was 1,190 seconds. The orbit achieved is 179 km x 1412 km. “All spacecraft parameters are normal,” it said.

The next Lunar bound orbit maneuver is scheduled 30 August, between 6 pm and 7 pm.

The Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft had successfully entered the lunar orbit on 20 August by performing Lunar Orbit Insertion (LOI) maneuver. The second lunar-bound orbit maneuver was conducted on 21 August, two sets of pictures of moon captured by the spacecraft were released.

ISRO will carry out two more orbit manoeuvres after which the spacecraft will enter into its final orbit passing over the lunar poles at a distance of about 100 km from the Moon’s surface.

On 2 September, the lander would separate from the Orbiter and enter into a 100 km X 30 km orbit around the Moon. A series of complex braking maneuvers to soft land in the South polar region of the Moon on 7 September 2019.
