The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has completed construction and allied works at the Royapuram bus terminus in north Chennai. The bus terminus is set to be inaugurated next month, after which MTC will start bus operations from there. In October, a foundation stone will be laid for a new bus terminus at Broadway. Bus services will be shifted from Broadway to Royapuram, which will reduce travel time for north Chennai passengers and ease traffic congestion near Broadway.
The new Royapuram bus terminus can accommodate up to 55 buses. Facilities include toilets, waiting halls for passengers and staff, and a feeding room. GCC has coordinated with MTC, traffic police, and Metro Water Department to meet operational needs, said GCC Chief Engineer B. Shankaravelu.
Based on MTC requests, modifications like terminal roof changes, redesigned bus bays, and additional speed breakers near Royapuram Bridge will be implemented. Bus services will gradually increase depending on demand. As it is a temporary terminal, parking facilities are not available yet.
