Chennai is seeing a rise in flu cases, with hospitals reporting more patients with fever, cough, and sore throat. Doctors say the increase is due to influenza viruses such as H1N1, H3N2, and other respiratory infections.

Dr. P. Sampath, Additional Director of Public Health, said, “The fever season begins with pre-monsoon rains. Outpatient visits have increased by 25-50%, and some patients need hospital admission.”

Dr. S. Chandrasekar from Stanley Medical College added, “Children are more affected. Symptoms include fever, body pain, tiredness, sore throat, and cough lasting up to three weeks.”

Most cases are mild, but people with weak immunity or existing health problems may face complications. Doctors advise high-risk individuals to wear masks, maintain hygiene, stay hydrated, and consider flu vaccinations.

Medical experts also warn that flu symptoms can resemble other infections like dengue or COVID-19. They recommend that anyone with persistent fever, difficulty breathing, or severe fatigue should seek medical attention immediately. Early treatment can help prevent complications and reduce the spread of infection.

Hospitals across Chennai are preparing for an expected rise in patients. Health authorities are urging schools, offices, and public places to maintain hygiene, encourage handwashing, and avoid overcrowding to limit transmission. Public awareness campaigns are also being planned to educate people about preventive measures.
