Kallakurichi:
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has intensified its investigation into the fake liquor tragedy that took place in Kallakurichi district last year.
The incident happened in June 2024 when people from Karunapuram and nearby areas consumed liquor mixed with harmful methanol. As a result, 69 people died and over 230 were hospitalised.
Initially, the CB-CID arrested 24 people who were involved in selling and supplying the poisonous liquor. A retired judge also led a special inquiry to meet the victims’ families and investigate the issue.
Later, the Madras High Court ordered that the case be handed over to the CBI. Since then, the CBI has re-registered the case and started fresh investigations.
CBI officials have visited the affected areas, collected documents, and met victims’ families. They are trying to find out how the illegal liquor was made and who was behind the supply.
The investigation is ongoing, and the CBI is expected to reveal more details soon.
