In a major infrastructure boost, the Tamil Nadu government has given its in-principle approval for the Chennai Metro Rail Limited’s (CMRL) proposed Koyambedu–Avadi–Pattabiram corridor. The approval follows the submission of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) by CMRL in February and paves the way for further processing at the central level.

The corridor, estimated to cost Rs. 9,928.33 crore, will span 21.76 km from the existing Koyambedu Metro station to Pattabiram, with 19 stations planned en route. The State government has also recommended the project to the Central government for approval, funding through equity participation, and assistance from bilateral or multilateral financial institutions.

Key station stops in the proposed stretch include Padi Pudhu Nagar, Park Road, Ambattur Estate, Dunlop, Thirumullaivoyal, Avadi Railway Station, and Hindu College, among others. Notably, the corridor will feature a double-decker structure at three locations, accommodating an elevated road on the first level and Metro rail on the second.

According to CMRL officials, the entire stretch will be elevated—similar to the Airport–Kilambakkam corridor. Construction is expected to take three years from the time the contract is awarded. Approximately 112 acres of land will be acquired for the project, which includes space for viaducts, stations, and a depot. Three-coach trains are planned for this line to accommodate projected passenger volumes.

The corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel time for thousands of daily commuters in areas such as Avadi, Thirunindravur, Ambattur, Pattabiram, and Mogappair, who currently depend on road transport and suburban rail. Public enthusiasm for the project is high, with residents anticipating faster and more reliable connectivity.
