Heavy rain started the night before yesterday, bringing thunderstorms and two hours of intense rainfall to the Thondamuthur area and its surroundings.
Due to continuous downpour in regions near the Western Ghats, including Kannuvai, Chinnathadagam, Anaikatti, and Kurudampalayam, the Sanganoor stream overflowed, causing flooding. Residents living along the banks were evacuated to safer locations by the Revenue Department officials.
In areas like Valparai, Mettupalayam, Annur, Perur, and Madukkarai, heavy rain caused the walls of 10 houses to collapse, and several huts were also damaged.
The displaced residents were sheltered in safe locations arranged by the Revenue Department.
Meanwhile, as the Northeast Monsoon approaches, widespread rain lashed Madurai district the night before yesterday, with Thallakulam recording a maximum of 12 cm of rainfall.
As a result, low-lying areas such as Annanagar, KK Nagar, Karumpalai, and Sathya Nagar in Kovil Pappakudi were inundated with water. Rainwater collected at Carter Bridge, Thathaneri, and the Thiruparankundram subway was pumped out with motor pumps, restoring normalcy by 7:00 AM.
Ganesan (56), a farmer at Kachirarayanpatti near Melur, Madurai, was electrocuted when he came in contact with a live wire. It had snapped after a coconut leaf stalk fell on the wire during rains. Ayyakannu (58) of Palavangudi village near Karaikudi, Sivaganga, was electrocuted in a similar way.
Meanwhile, two men – Gopi and Ramesh – residents of Kochadai, Madurai, were trapped in their car while trying to wade through an inundated railway girder bridge (subway) near Maninagaram. They were rescued by a patrolling cop and two residents. Fire and Rescue Services recovered the car stuck in flood waters.
