Jamshedpur, Aug 23: In the ongoing Durand Cup, Mohun Bagan Super Giant will aim to continue their title defense as they take on Punjab FC in the third quarterfinal at the JRD Sports Complex Stadium in Jamshedpur on Friday.Head coach Jose Molina expressed the team’s focus on the competition, stating, “We are treating every match in this pre-season as preparation for the season ahead. Winning the Durand Cup is a priority for us, and we are committed to giving our best.”
The squad will miss key players Glan Martins, Ashique Kuruniyan, and Jamie Maclaren, but the attack will be spearheaded by Jason Cummings and Greg Stewart. Both players have collectively contributed to 82 goals (49 goals and 33 assists) in Indian football.
Punjab FC, meanwhile, has qualified as one of the best second-placed teams and remains unbeaten in the tournament, with two wins and a draw. The team’s attack will be led by Luka Majcen, known for his impressive record of 29 goals and five assists in 54 matches as Punjab FC transitioned from the I-League to the Indian Super League.
The club recently underwent a coaching change, with Panagiotis Dilmperis replacing Staikos Vergetis. Dilmperis, in his debut major tournament in India, is eager to make a strong impression. He commented, “We have a clear game plan and the players are in high spirits. Facing one of the strongest teams in Indian football will be a challenge, but in a knockout tournament, anything can happen.”
The match between Mohun Bagan and Punjab FC is set to kick off at 4 PM IST. The winner will advance to face the victor of the final quarterfinal between Kerala Blasters and Bengaluru FC, scheduled for later in the day.
