Tamil Manila Congress (Moopanar) president G.K. Vasan has voiced serious concerns regarding the proposed construction of a dam across the Cauvery river at Mekedatu in Karnataka, warning that it could have devastating consequences for the delta districts of Tamil Nadu. Vasan accused the ruling DMK of failing to take necessary steps to prevent the project, attributing their inaction to vote bank politics.
Expressing apprehension over the potential impact of the dam on water scarcity in Tamil Nadu, Vasan urged the state government to proactively address the issue by ensuring a continuous water supply to meet the needs of its citizens. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, particularly in light of the prevailing heatwave and depletion of reservoir storage across the state.
To mitigate water scarcity, Vasan proposed sinking additional borewells and raising awareness about the judicious use of water, especially during the summer months. He also stressed the importance of considering the irrigation needs of farmers, highlighting the crucial role of water in agricultural activities.
In addition to concerns over water scarcity, Vasan also voiced opposition to the construction of the Vallalar International Centre at Vadalur in Cuddalore district. He argued that such construction would be unacceptable, as Vadalur holds historical significance as a site of charitable activities, including ‘Annadhanam’ (food donation). Vasan urged the government to respect the sentiments of devotees and reconsider the construction of the center against their wishes.
