Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman launched a scathing attack on the DMK, accusing the party of withholding the truth regarding the Katchatheevu issue and betraying the interests of Tamil Nadu’s traditional fishermen. Speaking at a campaign rally in support of BJP candidate Karuppu M Muruganandam in Thanjavur, Sitaraman asserted that the DMK was complicit in the transfer of Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka, resulting in immense hardship for the state’s fishermen.Highlighting the longstanding grievances of Tamil Nadu fishermen regarding the Katchatheevu issue, Sitaraman underscored the DMK’s culpability in the matter, alleging that the party was aware of and supported the decision to cede the islet to Sri Lanka. She emphasized the need for accountability and transparency in addressing the plight of Tamil Nadu’s fishermen, stressing that it was the duty of political leaders to convey the truth to the people and hold the DMK accountable for its actions.
Sitaraman criticized the DMK for allegedly spreading falsehoods and misinformation, asserting that the BJP was committed to exposing the truth and dispelling the DMK’s lies. She reiterated the BJP’s efforts to bring about change in Tamil Nadu and urged voters to reject the DMK’s narrative by scrutinizing its record on critical issues such as Katchatheevu.
The Katchatheevu issue has long been a point of contention for Tamil Nadu’s fishermen, who have faced challenges accessing traditional fishing grounds following the islet’s transfer to Sri Lanka. Sitaraman’s remarks underscored the BJP’s determination to address the concerns of Tamil Nadu’s fishermen and hold the DMK accountable for its role in the Katchatheevu issue.
