Former Indian National Congress President Rahul Gandhi emphasized the significance of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in 2024, characterizing them as more than just routine elections but rather as a battleground between autocratic rule and democratic values. Speaking at a rally alongside DMK leader M.K. Stalin, Gandhi underscored the importance of preserving the legacy and constitutional principles of the country.
Addressing the crowd in support of Congress nominee S. Jothimani and DMK nominees Ganapathy P. Rajkumar and Easwarasamy for the Coimbatore and Pollachi Lok Sabha seats respectively, Gandhi reiterated the need to safeguard India’s democratic ethos against the encroachment of authoritarian tendencies.
Rahul Gandhi did not mince words in his critique of the Narendra Modi-led government, asserting that it should be labeled as the “Adani Government” due to its alleged favoritism towards industrialist Gautam Adani. He cited the example of the Mumbai Airport, alleging that the government swiftly facilitated Adani’s acquisition of the airport following a CBI investigation against its previous owners. According to Gandhi, this transaction epitomizes the close relationship between the Modi government and Adani, raising concerns about crony capitalism and misuse of governmental power.
Meanwhile, DMK president and Chief Minister MK Stalin launched scathing allegations against the Centre-ruling BJP, accusing them of hindering Tamil Nadu’s growth by diverting investments meant for the state to BJP-ruled territories. Speaking at the rally, Stalin asserted that the BJP government has systematically redirected investments away from Tamil Nadu, jeopardizing the state’s development prospects.
Stalin highlighted a specific instance where a firm intending to invest a substantial Rs 6,500 crore in Tamil Nadu for semiconductor manufacturing was coerced into relocating to Gujarat by the BJP. He condemned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertion that the DMK was impeding development projects in Tamil Nadu, arguing that it was the BJP itself obstructing progress by diverting investments and depriving the state of employment opportunities.
Accusing the BJP of neglecting Tamil Nadu’s interests for the past decade, Stalin emphasized the lack of special schemes or initiatives extended to the state by the Centre. He criticized Modi for focusing on electioneering within India instead of highlighting his achievements during his tenure.
Stalin also took aim at the Prime Minister’s alleged involvement in corruption, insinuating that Modi would be a fitting chancellor for a hypothetical university dedicated to corrupt practices. He lambasted the BJP for purportedly exploiting government agencies like the Enforcement Directorate, Income Tax, and the Central Bureau of Investigation to conduct raids and extort funds. Stalin cited instances such as the PM Cares Fund controversy and the Rafale scam as evidence of the BJP’s financial mismanagement and malfeasance.
Furthermore, Stalin criticized the AIADMK, accusing them of maintaining a clandestine alliance with the BJP and labeling them as the ‘B’ team of the ruling party. He denounced the AIADMK for prioritizing their political interests over the welfare of Tamil Nadu.
