The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has issued a yellow alert for Tamil Nadu as soaring temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius grip various parts of the state. Officials have warned that the mercury is likely to climb even higher, with temperatures expected to surpass normal summer levels by up to four degrees.
Weather experts attribute the sweltering conditions to factors such as wind discontinuity and cyclonic circulation, which are anticipated to intensify into a heatwave over northern Tamil Nadu in the next two days, prompting the issuance of the yellow alert.
In the past 24 hours, heatwave conditions have prevailed over interior districts of Tamil Nadu, including Karur Paramathi, Dharmapuri, and Madurai. The maximum temperature has exceeded normal levels by 2-5 degrees Celsius across most pockets in the plains of interior Tamil Nadu, according to the RMC.
Looking ahead, weather forecasts indicate that the maximum temperature is poised to rise by 2-4 degrees Celsius above normal in northern interior Tamil Nadu. Furthermore, nighttime temperatures are expected to surge by 2-3 degrees Celsius above normal across the state, leading to hot and discomforting weather conditions in isolated pockets over the next five days.
In response to the impending heatwave, the meteorological department has issued advisory measures to safeguard public health. Individuals are advised to avoid outdoor activities between 12 noon and 3 pm when temperatures peak and to refrain from engaging in strenuous tasks during periods of high heat.
Furthermore, it is recommended that individuals stay hydrated by consuming ample water and oral rehydration solutions (ORS), as well as homemade beverages like lassi, rice water, lemon water, and buttermilk. Those working outdoors are encouraged to utilize protective measures such as hats, umbrellas, and damp cloths to cool their bodies and prevent heat-related illness
