In a significant move aimed at enhancing the quality of higher education and fostering student welfare, the Tamil Nadu government has allocated an additional Rs 1,245 crore this year for the Higher Education Department compared to the previous fiscal year. With a slew of welfare measures and ambitious plans, the state is poised to transform its educational landscape and empower the next generation of learners.Presenting the Tamil Nadu budget, Thangam Thenarasu, Minister for Finance and Human Resources Management, underscored the government’s commitment to elevating the standards of higher education across the state. A total allocation of Rs 8,212 crore has been earmarked for the Higher Education Department, reflecting a substantial increase from Rs 6,967 crore allocated last year.
One of the flagship initiatives announced is the implementation of a new scheme at a cost of Rs 3,014 crore to upgrade 45 government polytechnic colleges to Industry 4.0 standards. This forward-thinking initiative aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world, aligning educational offerings with the demands of the evolving job market.
Furthermore, the government has allocated Rs 200 crore for the civil infrastructure upgrade of government Arts and Science colleges, Engineering colleges, and Polytechnics in the upcoming fiscal year. This investment underscores the government’s commitment to providing students with modern and conducive learning environments conducive to academic excellence.
In a bid to enhance the technological infrastructure of government educational institutions, Rs 173 crore has been allocated for the provision of computers and scientific equipment, along with Integrated Learning Management Systems, to 236 government educational institutions. This strategic investment aims to facilitate digital learning and innovation, empowering students with the tools and resources needed to excel in their academic pursuits.
