In a landmark decision, the Madras High Court has given the green light for the much-anticipated Formula 4 night street race to take place in Chennai. Acting on a petition filed against the event, the court refused to grant a stay and permitted the state government to proceed with future such events, emphasizing the utmost importance of public safety. The ruling comes as a significant victory for motorsport enthusiasts and organizers alike, paving the way for India’s first-ever Formula Night Street Race.
The decision follows a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking to ban the race on grounds of public safety. However, the court rejected the petition, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring adequate safety measures are in place for the event.
In November last year, Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development, Udhayanidhi Stalin, announced plans for the Formula Night Street Race, signaling a new era for motorsport in the country. The event is set to take place on a 3.7km circuit around the iconic Island Grounds, heralding the inception of the Chennai Formula Racing Circuit.
Udhayanidhi Stalin highlighted the significance of the event, which will feature the Formula 4 Indian Championship, showcasing 12 skilled drivers from around the globe. Additionally, the Indian Racing League will feature 24 drivers, including six talented women racers distributed across six teams, underscoring the event’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in motorsport.
The Formula 4 night street race promises to be a spectacle of speed, skill, and excitement, drawing motorsport enthusiasts and spectators from far and wide.
