In a significant development for Chennai’s metro infrastructure, the Chennai Metro Rail has commenced the demolition of a segment of the flyover at the Royapettah High Road-Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai junction. This demolition is a crucial step in making way for an underground station as part of the ambitious Phase II project.
The Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai station, falling under corridor 3 of the expansive 116 km Phase II project, requires the removal of a portion of the existing flyover. The demolition process is anticipated to conclude within the next one or two months, with traffic diversions in place until the completion of the underground station. The construction of the underground station is estimated to take around three years and will be carried out at a depth of 15-18 meters, featuring two entry/exit points. Stringent precautionary measures are being implemented to ensure the safety of the construction process.
Upon the completion of the underground station, the reconstruction of the flyover will follow suit. This strategic move is part of the larger ₹61,843 crore Phase II project, which includes various transformative initiatives, such as the partial removal of the Adyar flyover to facilitate the construction of the Adyar Junction station.
The ongoing progress of Corridor 4 (Light House to Poonamallee) and Corridor 5 (Madhavaram to Sholinganallur) is reported to be proceeding according to plan, marking positive strides in the expansion of Chennai’s metro network.
The comprehensive approach to urban development through the Phase II project demonstrates the city’s commitment to enhancing its public transportation infrastructure. As the metro network expands, residents can anticipate improved connectivity and reduced commuting times, contributing to the overall efficiency and sustainability of Chennai’s urban mobility.
The phased implementation of these projects showcases a thoughtful approach to minimize disruptions to daily life while laying the foundation for a more robust and modern metro system in Chennai. The Chennai Metro Rail’s endeavors in Phase II stand as a testament to the city’s vision for a progressive and well-connected future.
