The Tamil Nadu government filed a plea against Governor RN Ravi for notifying search and selection committees for Vice Chancellors of three state universities. While Governor Ravi reportedly cited UGC norms and a Supreme Court judgement, the state government contended that it was a violation of state laws.
The appeal comes after Higher Education minister K Ponmudy announced that he would boycott the convocation of Madurai Kamaraj University as Governor Ravi had not consented to conferring a honorary doctorate to communist leader and freedom fighter N Sankaraiah.
Earlier this week, the government also moved the Supreme Court to direct the Governor to take action on Bills in a specified time frame.
