Chennai is gearing up to host the WTA Chennai Open 2025, bringing elite women’s tennis back to the city. The WTA 250 International event will be held at the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Nungambakkam, with Singles Qualifying rounds on October 25 and 26, followed by the Main Draw from October 27 to November 2, 2025.
Indian tennis legend and President of the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association (TNTA), Vijay Amritraj, has been instrumental in the tournament’s return. He shared insights into the event’s complexities and ambitions, noting the total prize money of USD 275,094 (approximately ₹2.39 crore). WTA 250 regulations allow for the inclusion of one top-ten player, depending on appearance fees.
Significant investments have been made in stadium renovations to meet WTA standards, including a license fee paid to Octagon, the rights holder. Amritraj emphasized improvements in player hospitality, stating, “Good food, accommodation and transport are impeccable,” as transportation facilities are also being enhanced.
A key concern for the organizers is Chennai’s unpredictable October weather. Discussions with the Met Office indicate a possibility of nine rainy days during the month. In response, organizers are preparing “wet teams” for all courts and considering additional covers, especially given the limited covered seating. Amritraj expressed a hopeful sentiment for favorable weather, adding, “We can stand on our heads and do the best job we can and we will.”
Regarding Indian participation, wild cards are being considered, but qualifying rounds are seen as a more realistic path for most players. Maya Rajeshwaran was highlighted as a promising Indian contender for the main draw. Despite concurrent tournaments in Japan, China, and Hong Kong, a stronger and more competitive field than last year is anticipated.
The tournament will feature a 32-player singles main draw, a 24-player singles qualifying draw, and a 16-team doubles main draw, all to be played on hard courts. Although the WTA has granted a one-year sanction primarily due to weather concerns, Amritraj is confident that a successful event this year, supported by a three-year contract with Octagon, will secure its long-term future in Chennai.
