The Tamil Nadu Auto Workers’ Union, affiliated with the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), has announced a protest against State Transport Minister SS Sivasankar for his comments supporting bike taxis.
M. Sivaji, the General Secretary of the Union, stated that despite the state government issuing an order directing officials to take action against bike taxis, Minister Sivasankar recently made statements in favor of corporate firms operating bike taxis. Sivaji clarified that although the minister mentioned that the Centre had authorized bike taxis, no official permission has been granted for their operation in Tamil Nadu.
In response to the minister’s remarks, the Union has planned a rally and demonstration in Chennai on December 19, where workers will voice their opposition to the increasing presence of bike taxis in the state.
