Chennai currently lacks a venue that can accommodate over 5,000 people with adequate parking facilities for large-scale events. This often results in overcrowding and traffic congestion during major functions.

In response, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced in the Legislative Assembly that the government would build the Kalaignar International Auditorium at Muttukadu. A budget of ₹487 crore has been allocated for this project.

The auditorium complex will consist of four buildings, including an exhibition hall that can seat 15,000 people, for which ₹127 crore has been set aside. Additionally, a performance hall for 10,000 people will be constructed at a cost of ₹108 crore. Two event halls, each with a seating capacity of 5,000, will also be built, with ₹102 crore allocated for each.

The international auditorium will feature parking facilities for 1,000 cars, escalators, and other modern amenities. To expedite the project, the Chennai Regional Public Works Department has announced tenders for contractors in four packages. The selection of contractors will take place on the 16th of this month.
