As the release date for Kottukkaali approaches, Soori, known for his roles in Viduthalai and Garudan, reflects on his latest project and its significance. Scheduled to hit theaters on August 23, Kottukkaali is poised to offer a distinct departure from Soori’s previous films. In an interview, Soori described Kottukkaali as a mainstream, content-oriented film that is deeply rooted in realism. He emphasized the film’s close reflection of reality, focusing on a character named Pandi, who embodies traits common to many families.
Soori elaborated on his portrayal of Pandi, stating, “Pandi is a person you find in every family. He strongly adheres to the societal relationship patterns and beliefs. Throughout the film, I was meticulous in depicting Pandi’s mental struggle, shaped by societal norms, while also highlighting him as an individual. I hope my performance does justice to this complex character.”
The film’s narrative centers on two Indian families planning the marriage of their daughter, Meena, and son, Pandi. Complications arise when Meena falls in love with someone from a lower caste. The story delves into the aftermath of this revelation, exploring themes of societal pressure and personal conflict.
Kottukkaali has already garnered significant attention on the international stage. It was the first Tamil film to premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival and has since been screened at the Transilvania International Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Award. Additionally, it received the Golden Lynx Award for Best Feature Film at the Portugal International Film Festival.
Soori praised the film’s approach, contrasting it with his earlier works. “Unlike Viduthalai and Garudan, which were more genre-specific, Kottukkaali offers a realistic portrayal of life and societal dynamics. It’s a film that I believe will resonate deeply with audiences,” he said.
Reflecting on his role, Soori expressed his personal connection to the story. “I was fascinated by why this story hadn’t been made into a film before. Playing Pandi was a rewarding experience, and I genuinely hope that the audience finds the story and my performance meaningful.”
The film, directed by PS Vinoth Raj, also stars Anna Ben in a leading role. Produced by Sivakarthikeyan in collaboration with The Little Wave Productions, Kottukkaali has completed production and is now ready for its theatrical release.
As the release date draws near, Soori is hopeful that Kottukkaali will engage and move audiences, offering a fresh perspective on societal issues through its compelling narrative and authentic portrayal.
