Gaza, August 2: Two Al-Jazeera journalists were killed in an Israeli airstrike in northern Gaza City, according to the network. The victims have been identified as Ismail al-Ghoul, a 27-year-old correspondent, and Rami al-Rifi, a cameraman. A child traveling with them also died in the blast. The airstrike hit the car in which the journalists were traveling. This incident marks a grim addition to the ongoing violence in Gaza, where 111 journalists have been killed since the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict last October.
The attack occurred as the journalists were reporting from the al-Shati refugee camp. The area has seen heightened tensions following the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran earlier in the day.
The Israeli military has yet to comment on the incident. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric has called for a thorough investigation into the killings, emphasizing the need to protect journalists in conflict zones.
The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate and Hamas have accused Israel of deliberately targeting the journalists. Al-Jazeera has faced ongoing threats and attacks during the conflict, with previous incidents involving its reporters, including the deaths of Samer Abu Daqqa and Wael al-Dahdouh’s family members.
This latest attack underscores the dangers faced by journalists working in volatile regions and the urgent need for accountability and protection.
