The judicial custody of V Senthilbalaji, a Minister without portfolio in Chennai, has been extended for the eighth consecutive time. The latest extension will keep him in custody until October 20.
Senthilbalaji was arrested on June 14 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The arrest was related to an alleged cash-for-jobs scam that took place during his tenure as the Transport Minister in the AIADMK regime.
The recent court hearing took place through video conference from Puzhal Central prison, where Senthilbalaji is currently held. The appearance was recorded, and the first additional judge, D Lingeswaran, extended his judicial custody. This extension comes at a time when Senthilbalaji’s bail plea is still pending before the Madras High Court. His counsel has been seeking bail on medical grounds, citing his need for ongoing medical attention.
During his incarceration, Senthilbalaji was taken to Stanley Government Hospital due to his ailment following surgery and was later transferred back to Puzhal Central Prison.
