Chennai: “People nowadays are living a stressful life and once in a while they need to let go of their stress. The best way to do that is to laugh out loud and that though is what gave birth to Madipakkam Comedy Club (MCC),” said Srikumar, secretary of Madipakkam Comedy Club.

“There are so many comedy clubs in different parts of the city including Tambaram and Triplicane. But it is really tough for senior citizens, school students and housewives to go to these places and take part in the club activities. Swaminathan (current president of the MCC) came up with the idea of starting a comedy club in and for Madipakkam. MCC was started with the combined efforts of Swaminathan, Kovai Anuradha and myself,” said Srikumar.

The show happens from 4 pm to 6 pm on the third Sunday of every month. It is open to everyone and there are no charges and no entry fee. The ultimate aim of the club is to bring people under one roof and reduce stress by happily laughing together.

“As of now, the show is held in the hall of Sundara Vinayagar Temple in Sheela Nagar, as the place is convenient and the management agreed to provide the space at free of cost. We are funded by sponsors and donations. We also provide refreshments to the attendees,” said Kovai Anuradha, who is also the secretary of the club.

The show begins with a skit that is mostly written and enacted by the members and they also give an opportunity for the residents to perform their own skit. After the performance, members and the chief guests will crack jokes, followed by the attendees. Residents of the neighbourhood can also share their jokes after prior registration.

“People from all walks of life come to the show. But the majority are elderly people and housewives as they get lesser chances to go out and enjoy themselves. They are the most enthusiastic set of participants in the show,” said Srikumar.

“It has been only 10 months since we started the club and already we are receiving good response. The number of participants is increasing show by show and we are really happy,” concludes Anuradha with a bright smile.
