Tamil actor‑turned‑politician Vijay, who leads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has paid rich tribute to the late former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) on his birth anniversary, describing him as a transformative leader in Tamil Nadu politics.

In a message posted on social media to mark MGR’s birthday, Vijay lauded the Dravidian icon’s legacy, saying that MGR occupies a “golden place in the hearts of the people of Tamil Nadu” and was known for championing welfare schemes for the poor and marginalised. He also noted MGR’s role in empowering ordinary citizens and following the democratic path laid down by earlier leader C.N. Annadurai.

Vijay called MGR a revolutionary who extended authority to common people and was a leader deeply associated with welfare programmes aimed at the economically disadvantaged. His tribute underscored the enduring respect MGR commands across political lines in the state, especially among those who view his tenure as a period of strong pro‑people governance.

The TVK chief’s homage comes at a time when his party is gearing up for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, positioning itself as an emerging political force. In his political speeches elsewhere, Vijay has frequently referenced Dravidian icons including MGR and C.N. Annadurai to articulate TVK’s ideological roots and to appeal to traditional Dravidian voters.
