The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has issued summons to senior functionaries of Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), including Bussy Anand and Aadhav Arjunaa, in connection with the Karur stampede case that claimed 41 lives during a political rally in September this year.
The case relates to a tragic stampede that occurred on September 27, 2025, in Velusamypuram, Karur district, where a large crowd gathered for a TVK public meeting addressed by party chief Vijay. Due to overcrowding, poor crowd management, and inadequate safety arrangements, 41 people lost their lives and many others were injured.
Following controversies surrounding the investigation, the Supreme Court ordered the case to be handed over to the CBI, and the agency has taken over the probe.
As part of the ongoing investigation, summons have been issued to TVK leaders Bussy Anand and Aadhav Arjunaa, asking them to appear at the CBI headquarters in Delhi on December 29, 2025 to record their statements. In addition, CTR Nirmal Kumar (TVK joint general secretary) and Mathiyazhagan (TVK Karur district secretary) have also been summoned by the CBI.
The leader’s appearance before the CBI is part of the agency’s fact-finding process to determine responsibilities and any lapses in safety arrangements at the event that led to the deadly crush. Following the summons, the TVK office-bearers are expected to travel to Delhi to comply with the investigation.
The Karur tragedy has sparked widespread debate about crowd control, event permissions, and political rallies in Tamil Nadu, and the CBI probe continues to examine all dimensions of the incident.
