Karthi has opened up about the high-risk, high-reward nature of his upcoming action-comedy Vaa Vaathiyaar, calling the project “like walking on a sword.” The film, directed by Nalan Kumarasamy, revolves around a daring plotline that draws inspiration from the legacy of iconic actor-politician M.G. Ramachandran, making it a particularly challenging role for the actor.
Speaking at the pre-release event, Karthi said the subject itself pushed him out of his comfort zone. He compared Nalan’s distinctive approach to working with Selvaraghavan in Aayirathil Oruvan, where ideas evolve unpredictably and take time to fully understand. “I hesitated initially because of how unconventional the script was,” Karthi admitted, adding that he ultimately trusted Nalan’s vision to break boundaries. He emphasized that actors must face their fears and accept that criticism is unavoidable when they attempt something new.
Vaa Vaathiyaar also marks Karthi’s return to the big screen after a yearlong break following Meiyazhagan. The film aims to reinvent classic Indian masala cinema with humour, action, and nostalgic energy, wrapped in Nalan’s trademark quirky storytelling style.
Krithi Shetty plays the female lead, and the cast boasts veterans and popular actors including Rajkiran, Sathyaraj, Anandaraj, Karunakaran, G.M. Sundar, Shilpa Manjunath, and Ramesh Thilak. Despite last-minute legal issues surrounding its release, the film has generated strong buzz for its unique premise and star-studded lineup.
Vaa Vaathiyaar is slated to hit theatres on December 12, 2025.
