In a remarkable milestone for sustainable tourism, Trek Tamil Nadu, the State government’s flagship eco-adventure initiative, has completed one successful year, attracting over 15,500 trekkers, including 150 international participants. Launched in 2024 by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, the project — a joint venture of the Tamil Nadu Forest Department (TNFD) and the Tamil Nadu Wilderness Experiences Corporation (TNWEC) — has redefined eco-tourism by blending adventure, conservation, and community empowerment. Offering curated, eco-sensitive trekking routes across the State’s most scenic forest landscapes, the initiative has provided training and jobs for local tribal and forest-fringe villagers, including women guides. Top trekking routes include Yelagiri–Swamimalai, Gudiyam Caves (Thiruvallur), Baraliyar (Coimbatore), and Avalanche–Kolaribetta (Nilgiris). The government now plans to expand Trek Tamil Nadu to over 50 routes in partnership with the Tourism Department. The initiative, lauded nationally, has won several awards including the “Best Niche Tourism Operator” at the Tamil Nadu Tourism Awards 2025. Officials said Trek Tamil Nadu stands as a model for community-driven, technology-enabled eco-tourism, strengthening both nature conservation and rural livelihoods. @@@@ St. George’s Cathedral restored to its colonial-era glory Chennai, Nov 3: The historic St. George’s Cathedral, a 210-year-old Neo-Classical landmark in Chennai and the mother church of the Church of South India (CSI), has been magnificently restored to its original splendour. Consecrated in 1815 during the British East India Company’s rule, the cathedral has long stood as a symbol of colonial architecture, faith, and community spirit. The restoration was undertaken to address extensive weathering, cracks, and decay caused by age, pollution, and humidity. The conservation work, guided by Professor Arun Menon of IIT Madras and convened by Col. David Devasahayam, emphasized authenticity by using lime mortar, treated teak wood, and traditional craftsmanship. Modern, reversible waterproofing and improved lighting were also integrated. Bishop Rt Rev Paul Francis Ravichandran said the vision was to build not just a beautiful structure but “a vibrant and unified Cathedral community.” Cathedral Presbyter Rev Dr Ruben Jayakumar called the restoration “a new beginning.” The renewed St. George’s Cathedral now stands as a proud testament to Chennai’s architectural legacy and its enduring spiritual heritage.
