The World Human Rights Commission (WHRC) and Rescue Centre have urged the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to investigate the Karur stampede at a political rally led by actor-turned-politician Vijay. The tragedy left 40 people dead and many injured.
In a complaint filed by WHRC Chairman Dr. S K Saamy, the petition blamed Tamil Nadu Police for failing to ensure public safety. It called for an independent NHRC probe, compensation for victims’ families, and clear safety rules for large gatherings.
Dr. Saamy described the incident as a “national shame” and a violation of the Right to Life. He urged NHRC to act quickly to ensure justice and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
