BJP leader K. Annamalai has asked for a CBI investigation into the Karur rally stampede that killed about 40 people. He says the state police and administration made serious mistakes.
He criticized the authorities for not foreseeing the crowd size. He questioned why the event was approved for seven hours and said security was weak. He claimed there were less than 100 police personnel present, though official sources say 500 were deployed.
Annamalai also challenged the state government’s plan to appoint a single‐judge inquiry, saying it won’t be fair if the judge is selected by the government. He demanded a neutral probe by the CBI. He also said actor-turned politician Vijay must act responsibly in future public events. He asked why many children died, noting that weekend rallies attract families.
In response, ADGP S Davidson Devasirvatham denied that there was an intelligence failure. He said the police inspected the venue, considered safety, and that some rules were violated. He noted a case has been filed and investigations are ongoing.
