Chennai is witnessing a steady boom in the number of marachekku oil (cold-pressed oil) outlets, as health-conscious residents increasingly turn to traditional alternatives over refined oils. From neighbourhood markets to high streets, small and medium-scale cold-pressed oil shops are becoming a common sight, reflecting a larger trend toward natural and chemical-free food products.
The rise in lifestyle-related ailments, coupled with an increased awareness about food habits, has prompted many to rethink their cooking choices. Marachekku oils—typically extracted from groundnut, sesame, or coconut using wooden crushers—are being touted as healthier options due to their minimal processing and absence of preservatives.
Speaking about the shift, Priya Rajendran, a homemaker from Adyar, said, “Ever since we started using marachekku oil, there’s been a noticeable difference in taste and digestion. I feel reassured knowing I’m not feeding my family overly processed oils.”
Small-scale entrepreneurs have also identified this as a lucrative business opportunity. “We started our shop just six months ago in Velachery, and the response has been overwhelming,” said Karthik R, a new-age entrepreneur. “People are willing to pay a little more for authenticity and health benefits.”
Nutritionists and doctors too have weighed in on the trend. Dr. R. Mahalakshmi, a city-based dietician, noted, “While marachekku oils are a better alternative to refined oils, moderation is key. Cold-pressed oils retain natural nutrients and antioxidants which help in managing cholesterol and maintaining overall heart health.”
As demand grows, many of these shops are also offering home delivery options and educating customers about oil extraction methods, shelf life, and usage tips. Some outlets even allow customers to witness the oil being extracted on-site, ensuring transparency and trust.
The marachekku oil boom in Chennai reflects a broader return to roots—where ancient wisdom is blending with modern health awareness. While it’s early to tell if this is a passing fad or a sustained shift, for now, the city is clearly embracing its traditional oils with pride and purpose.
