Russia Undeterred by Trump Tariff Threat

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has downplayed US President Donald Trump’s warning of imposing 100% tariffs on Russia and its trading partners, saying Moscow is well prepared to withstand any additional pressure. Speaking at a press conference following the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers Council meeting in Tianjin, China, Lavrov stressed that Russia is already facing an unprecedented number of sanctions but continues to cope effectively. “The number of sanctions announced against us is already unprecedented. We are coping; I have no doubt we will cope with the possible US sanctions,” Lavrov said, citing analysis from independent Western economists and political experts. President Trump recently issued a 50-day ultimatum to Moscow, demanding a settlement in Ukraine, failing which the US may enforce tariffs as high as 100%. In response, Lavrov questioned the rationale behind the 50-day timeline, recalling that similar deadlines had been used by Washington in the past without clear outcomes. “We’ve seen deadlines like 24 hours, 100 days – we’d like to understand what lies behind this particular statement,” Lavrov said, according to Russian news agency Tass. He further stated that Russia will respond calmly and confidently, relying on its resilience and strategic partnerships. During the same press briefing, Lavrov also reaffirmed the SCO nations’ collective support for Iran’s right to pursue peaceful nuclear energy, reflecting the group’s unified stance on major international issues. The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation currently includes 10 member states: China, Russia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus. China holds the current rotating presidency of the bloc. As geopolitical tensions continue to rise, Russia appears to be signaling that it is neither surprised nor intimidated by Trump’s latest trade threat; instead, it is preparing to navigate whatever challenges may lie ahead.
