Speaking at the event, Vijay Sethupathi shared that Anl Arasu had narrated the story to him back in 2019. While he initially didn’t expect his son to be a part of it, things changed over time. After meeting Arasu again on a flight, the conversation about the project resumed. Eventually, Arasu suggested that Surya would be a perfect fit for the lead role.

Sethupathi said his son has always admired Anl Arasu and added, “When he was a teenager, Surya was already making mature decisions. I want him to make his own choices and learn from them.” He also revealed that he stayed away from the film’s pooja and only visited the set once, allowing Surya the freedom to grow independently as an actor.

Director Anl Arasu, known for choreographing high-energy action scenes, takes on the role of filmmaker with Phoenix, which is expected to showcase intense action and emotional depth. The film’s trailer shows Surya in a rugged avatar, taking on opponents in boxing rings and street fights, hinting at a revenge-driven plot.

Filmmaker H. Vinoth, who was also present at the launch, said that Surya has the potential to become an action star from his very first film.

Phoenix also features Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Devadarshini, Sampath, and Harish Uthaman in key roles. The film is set to release in theatres on July 4, 2025.
