The International Toilet Festival 3.0 is underway, and this year it comes with a powerful mission: “Mapping Open Defecation and Urination.” Running from June 1 to July 5, the campaign calls on the people of Chennai to take part in a unique, citizen-driven sanitation initiative. The focus of this year’s festival is not just on awareness, but action. Residents are encouraged to report and tag locations where open defecation or urination is taking place using an interactive online map. This crowdsourced data will be used by urban planners, NGOs, and government bodies to improve public sanitation infrastructure in the most affected areas. Organisers stress that the process is simple and impactful: anyone who witnesses unsanitary behavior in public spaces can log the location digitally. This data will help prioritize areas that need public toilets, better maintenance, and stronger civic enforcement. “Sanitation is a collective responsibility,” said one of the campaign organizers. “Let’s not just talk toilets – let’s act.” The festival aims to spark a movement among citizens to take charge of their surroundings. With the active participation of the public, Chennai hopes to move one step closer to becoming a cleaner, safer, and more hygienic city for all.
