India is experiencing a renewed spike in COVID-19 cases, with active cases climbing to 5,364, according to official health data released on Thursday.
This marks a noticeable increase in infections across several states, prompting health authorities to remain on alert.
Kerala continues to report the highest number of active cases in the country, with 1,679 people currently under treatment. The state also reported two COVID-related deaths, both elderly individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
Other states with high active caseloads include:
Delhi: 562 cases, Maharashtra: 548 cases, West Bengal: 538 cases, Gujarat: 508 cases
and Karnataka: 436 cases
Apart from Kerala, one death each was reported from Punjab and Karnataka, bringing the total number of COVID-related deaths in the country since January 2025 to 55.
Health experts have attributed the rise in cases to the emergence of new COVID-19 sub-variants such as JN.1, LF.7, XFG, and the recently identified NB.1.8.1. While most infections are mild, there is heightened concern for individuals with co-morbidities.
In response, the Kerala Health Department has made COVID-19 testing mandatory for those exhibiting symptoms of fever, cold, cough, or respiratory distress. Hospitals have been advised to isolate symptomatic patients, enforce mask usage, and limit visitors. Positive RT-PCR samples are being sent for genome sequencing to track the spread and mutation of the virus.
The Union Health Ministry has instructed all states and union territories to review their COVID-19 preparedness and submit status reports to ensure readiness in case of further escalation.
Health officials continue to urge the public to practice basic precautions, including mask-wearing in crowded places, regular hand hygiene, and timely testing in case of symptoms.
