As schools across Chennai reopen after the summer break, safety takes centre stage with strict COVID-19 precautions in place. The Tamil Nadu government, in coordination with educational institutions, has rolled out a detailed set of guidelines to ensure a secure environment for students, teachers, and staff.
“We will be taking utmost care for the health and safety of students, teachers, and staff members. All the SOPs as far as COVID is concerned will be followed strictly as schools reopen,” said Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, Tamil Nadu’s Minister for School Education.
Key Safety Measures:
Thermal Screening: Daily temperature checks are mandatory at school entry points.
Disinfection Drives: Schools are disinfected regularly, especially classrooms, restrooms, and high-touch surfaces.
Sanitation Access: Hand sanitizers and wash stations are installed across school premises.
Social Distancing: Classrooms are restructured to maintain a safe distance between students.
Staggered Timings: Entry and exit timings are altered to avoid crowding.
At the Greater Chennai Primary School in Thiruvanmiyur, special efforts were made to create a welcoming atmosphere for students. “This is designed by teachers. It’s an initiative to make students feel warm and get over their vacation mood,” said Mariyashanti, Headmistress of the school.
Teachers across the city have been going the extra mile to ease the transition back to physical classrooms. From interactive welcome sessions to decorated school entrances, the goal is to bring comfort and normalcy back into students’ daily routines.
A Class 9 student expressed a common sentiment: “It felt a bit disheartening when I woke up and realised the vacations were over. But now that I’m back, I’m excited to meet my friends and get back to classes.”
The reopening comes with a blend of optimism and caution. While students are happy to return to their classrooms and friends, the emphasis remains on safety and awareness.
Health authorities and school administrations urge parents to keep symptomatic children at home and ensure mask compliance. With collective cooperation, Chennai hopes to ensure that learning continues without compromising safety.
For any updates and detailed guidelines, schools have also begun sending regular circulars and SMS alerts to parents.
As the city navigates this cautious reopening, the spirit of resilience and responsibility continues to define Chennai’s approach to education during the pandemic.
