Anna University is set to introduce a pioneering initiative aimed at equipping undergraduate (UG) students with the core concepts of climate change and disaster risk mitigation through its new climate-compatible growth programme. The programme, which will be launched on April 21, is spearheaded by the Centre for Climate Change and Disaster Management (CCCDM) at the Department of Civil Engineering.
The CCCDM has outlined the programme’s objective to inspire student-led climate action and stimulate interest in careers and research focusing on sustainability and resilience. According to a senior professor from Anna University, this training will also create a network of climate-conscious youth, equipped with the tools to implement science-based solutions for a sustainable future.
“Climate change is no longer a distant threat but a present-day reality,” said the professor. “With the increasing occurrences of extreme weather events, environmental degradation, and disaster-linked vulnerabilities, it’s critical that future scientists, engineers, and technologists not only have technical knowledge but also a solid understanding of environmental science and climate action.”
The professor further emphasized that foundational education in environmental science and climate literacy has the potential to ignite young minds, transforming them into climate-resilient thinkers, problem-solvers, and change agents. The programme will aim to provide students with the necessary skills to contribute to the science-based management of future risks, while also preparing them to enhance community resilience in the face of climate challenges.
The curriculum for the programme will cover a range of critical subjects, including the basics of climate science and climate change, sectoral climate change risks, climate disasters and resilience, as well as participatory discussions on climate action. The multifaceted approach aims to foster a generation that is prepared to tackle the challenges posed by climate change and contribute to sustainable development.
With this new programme, Anna University continues to position itself as a leader in addressing one of the most pressing global issues of our time, offering its students the knowledge and skills required to shape a more sustainable and resilient future.
