The Tamil Nadu government is actively supporting children diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes by providing free insulin injections, announced Health Minister Ma. Subramanian.
The Minister was speaking at a World Diabetes Day awareness event organized by the Rotary Club at Dr. M.G.R. Janaki Arts and Science College in Adyar, Chennai.
The government has launched several initiatives to manage diabetes and promote public health across the state. One such program, “Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam” (Healthcare at the Doorstep), focuses on delivering medicines to patients’ homes, particularly targeting those affected by diabetes and hypertension.
Under this initiative, 49.46 lakh diabetes patients and 44.46 lakh hypertension patients, totaling 94.08 lakh individuals, have received treatment. The program’s beneficiary count is nearing two crores, reflecting its widespread reach.
The government has introduced a special scheme to assist children affected by Type 1 diabetes. Currently, 2,500 children across the state are being administered insulin injections free of cost.
Another noteworthy program, “Paadham Kaakkum Thittam” (Save the Foot), provides early detection and preventive care for diabetic patients. Testing facilities have been established at primary health centers, ensuring early intervention to avoid complications like diabetic foot ulcers.
Minister Subramanian emphasized that Tamil Nadu has set a global benchmark in diabetes care through its comprehensive and patient-centric healthcare programs.
