Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram reaffirmed the strength and unity of the DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu, stating that the coalition remains intact and is well-positioned for success in the upcoming elections. Addressing reporters, Chidambaram clarified that recent statements from alliance leaders should not be misinterpreted as signs of discord, emphasizing that such speeches are meant to energize party cadres, which is essential for any political movement. He underscored that there are no differences within the alliance, which he described as being in “great shape.”
Expressing his concern over the tragic deaths of five individuals at Chennai’s Marina Beach on Sunday, where large crowds had gathered to witness an air show, Chidambaram called the incident “very unfortunate.” He acknowledged that the State government is offering compensation to the legal heirs of the victims and emphasized that the deaths were not due to a stampede, as some had speculated.
Regarding the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, Chidambaram backed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, stating that the war was not in anyone’s best interests. “We are all with the government on this issue and hope the war ends soon,” he remarked, noting that the conflict, which has been raging for nearly a year, could affect global oil prices. However, he downplayed concerns about a sharp rise, suggesting that prices may not spike as severely as some fear.
In a gesture of support for the development of Sivaganga, both P. Chidambaram, a Rajya Sabha MP, and his son Karti Chidambaram, the Lok Sabha MP for Sivaganga, contributed ₹1 crore each from their respective MP Local Area Development (MPLAD) funds towards the improvement of the Sivaganga bus stand. The cheque was handed over to Sivaganga Collector Asha Ajith, with Sivaganga Municipal Chairman Durai Anand also in attendance during the presentation.
