London, Aug 29: Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku landed in Naples on Wednesday to complete his transfer to Serie A side Napoli. The Belgian international was warmly welcomed by over 100 enthusiastic fans who gathered outside the club’s clinic for his medical examination.
The crowd chanted Lukaku’s name as he arrived, and he was seen smiling while being escorted through the throng of supporters. In a heartwarming moment, Lukaku stopped to help a fan who had fallen to the ground, delighting the supporter with his gesture.
Italian media reports indicate that Lukaku is set to sign a three-year contract with Napoli. The Serie A club will pay Chelsea €30 million ($33 million) for the forward, along with 30% of any future transfer fee.
Lukaku’s most successful seasons came under the management of Antonio Conte at Inter Milan. The 31-year-old striker has been training separately from Chelsea’s main squad recently, as the club sought to find a new home for him. Lukaku, who was acquired by Chelsea for a record $135 million in 2021, struggled in his second stint at Stamford Bridge. He spent the 2022-23 season on loan at Inter Milan and last season on loan at Roma.
Chelsea had previously bought Lukaku from Inter Milan after his impressive stint with the Nerazzurri, where he played a key role in their Serie A title win, finishing as the team’s top scorer with 24 league goals.
Conte, who managed Inter during Lukaku’s successful tenure, has returned to Italy two months ago with the mission to revitalize Napoli after a tumultuous season. Last year, Napoli saw three different coaches, culminating in a disappointing 10th-place finish. However, under Conte, the team has started the current Serie A season with a 3-0 loss followed by a 3-0 victory, marking their first league win since early April.
Napoli’s previous season ended with a missed European qualification, coming a year after they clinched their first Serie A title since the era of Diego Maradona.
