Renowned actor and politician Kushboo Sundar has taken to social media to express her thoughts on the ongoing discourse surrounding women’s safety in the film industry. Her comments come in the wake of the revelations made by the Hema Committee Report, which was established to investigate issues of sexual misconduct and assault within the Malayalam film industry. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Kushboo lauded the women who have bravely come forward with their stories, acknowledging the profound impact of the Me Too movement within the industry. She wrote, “This moment of Me Too prevailing in our industry breaks you. Kudos to the women who have stood their ground and emerged victorious. The Hema Committee was much needed to break the abuse. But will it?”
Kushboo’s reflections delve deeper into the challenges that women, particularly in the entertainment industry, continue to face. She highlighted the disproportionate burden placed on women, noting that while men can also be victims of misconduct, it is women who overwhelmingly bear the brunt of such abuses. “Why is a woman alone expected to go through the grind? Although men too face it, it’s marginally women who bear the brunt,” she questioned.
Beyond her public reflections, Kushboo shared a personal moment from her life, revealing that she had discussed the issue with her daughters. She expressed pride in their empathy and understanding toward the victims of such abuses. This conversation led her to emphasize the importance of creating a culture where victims feel safe to speak out without fear of retribution. “It doesn’t matter whether you speak today or tomorrow, just speak. Speaking up immediately would help in healing and investigating more effectively,” she urged.
The Hema Committee, named after its chairperson, veteran actress Hema, was formed years ago to investigate and address the safety of women in Malayalam cinema. Its report, now brought to light, has reignited discussions about the pervasive issues of sexual harassment and misconduct in the industry.
Kushboo Sundar’s comments reflect the ongoing struggle for women’s rights and safety in the entertainment world, calling for continued vigilance and systemic change to ensure that women no longer have to suffer in silence.
