Kiev, Aug 16: Ukraine has reported escalating violence along its eastern front, more than a week after its incursion into Russia. The conflict has intensified around Pokrovsk, with the heaviest fighting observed in recent weeks.

On August 6, Ukraine launched a significant assault into Russia’s Kursk region, aiming to secure a foothold and potentially divert Russian reserves to bolster their defenses. Despite these efforts, Ukrainian military sources indicate that Russian pressure in the east remains unabated.

Military spokesman Dmytro Lykhoviy noted that while Russia has redeployed some troops from the south of Ukraine, the overall number and distribution of forces have not significantly shifted. “No substantial changes in the size of the Russian forces have been detected, and there is no indication of a weakening in hostilities,” Lykhoviy stated.

Serhiy Tsehotskiy, an officer with the 59th Motorized Brigade, reported that the Russian military continues to concentrate its attacks in the partially-occupied Donetsk region. Despite the conflict’s developments in Russia, the bulk of Russian troops remain focused on this area, with ongoing pressure on Ukrainian positions.

The Ukrainian General Staff has documented 58 battles in the area near Pokrovsk, marking the highest daily engagement of the month. Additionally, the military blog DeepState has reported Russian advances in the villages of Zhelanne and Orlivka along Ukraine’s eastern front.

The situation remains fluid, with both sides engaged in fierce confrontations as the conflict continues to evolve.
