Chennai: Four months after its launch, popular Tamil actor Vijay’s political party, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), has announced that its primary objective is to win the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections. The party will not contest any elections, including local body polls, until then.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, TVK General Secretary N Bussy Anand emphasized that Vijay had clearly articulated the party’s political stance during its launch on February 2. Vijay, 49, is one of the highest-paid actors in India and commands a massive fan base. His entry into politics adds another high-profile name from the entertainment industry to the already crowded political landscape of Tamil Nadu.

Anand’s statement clarified that TVK would neither contest nor support any political party in the upcoming byelection for the Vikravandi assembly constituency on July 10. This bypoll will see a direct contest between the ruling DMK and PMK, an ally of the BJP, as the principal opposition party, AIADMK, has decided to boycott the election.

“Our party chief, Vijay, has already announced that winning the 2026 assembly elections is our primary goal. He will unveil the party’s ideology and programs during our first conference, which will be held soon. Vijay will also embark on a statewide tour after the conference,” Anand stated.

TVK’s decision to focus exclusively on the 2026 assembly elections reflects a strategic move to build a robust foundation and develop a comprehensive political agenda. Vijay’s entry into politics has generated significant interest, given his substantial influence and popularity in Tamil Nadu.

As Vijay prepares to formally present the party’s ideology and programs, political observers will be keenly watching how TVK positions itself within the state’s political framework and how it plans to attract and mobilize support from the electorate.
