Rameshwaram: The Sri Lankan Navy detained four fishermen from Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, accusing them of crossing maritime boundaries and fishing near the Neduntheevu area.

The arrested fishermen hail from Ramanathapuram district and were apprehended along with their boats.

The Sri Lankan authorities have taken the fishermen to a naval base for further investigation. This incident is part of a recurring pattern where the Sri Lankan Navy arrests Tamil Nadu fishermen who are found fishing near the international maritime boundary line (IMBL).

Fishing activities near the IMBL have been a contentious issue, as fishermen from Tamil Nadu often venture into deep-sea territories in search of a bountiful catch, especially as the fishing season nears its close. These ventures, however, sometimes lead them into disputed waters, resulting in frequent detentions by the Sri Lankan Navy.

The arrests have sparked concerns among the fishing communities in Tamil Nadu, who rely heavily on the waters near the IMBL for their livelihoods. The Tamil Nadu government has repeatedly urged the central government to find a lasting solution to the issue, seeking to prevent such incidents and ensure the safety of their fishermen.

As the situation develops, there is an expectation of diplomatic engagement between India and Sri Lanka to address the concerns raised by the fishing community and to negotiate the release of the detained fishermen. The Tamil Nadu government is closely monitoring the situation and is expected to issue a statement soon.

The recurring nature of these arrests highlights the need for clearer maritime boundaries and cooperative agreements between the two nations to safeguard the interests of fishermen and maintain peaceful maritime relations.
