The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party in Tamil Nadu has accused Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman of violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take action against her.

RS Bharathi, the organizing secretary of the DMK, filed a complaint against Sitharaman with the Election Commission, citing her speech at a private YouTube channel event in Tamil Nadu. In the complaint, Bharathi highlighted Sitharaman’s alleged violation of Conduct No. 3 of the Model Code of Conduct by making statements aimed at creating religious sentiments among Hindus.
Bharathi stated that Sitharaman’s remarks falsely claimed that the DMK was involved in “destroying temples, swindling temple funds, and undermining religion.” He emphasized that such statements were in violation of the MCC, which prohibits the use of religion for political gain.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Electoral Officer of Tamil Nadu, Bharathi urged the Election Commission to take swift and appropriate action against Sitharaman for her alleged misconduct during the election campaign.
The DMK’s complaint comes amidst heightened political tensions in Tamil Nadu ahead of the Lok Sabha polls scheduled for April 19.
