In a significant move aimed at benefiting ex-servicemen, the Tamil Nadu government, under the leadership of Chief Minister MK Stalin, has announced an exemption from property and house taxes for ex-servicemen in the state. The decision, made through an ordinance issued on Wednesday, comes as welcome news for approximately 1.20 lakh ex-servicemen residing in Tamil Nadu. The exemption from property and house taxes, effective from the current financial year, aims to provide financial relief and support to ex-servicemen who have served the nation with dedication and valor. However, it’s important to note that the scheme excludes ex-servicemen who are income taxpayers. Previously, property tax refunds were available only to specific categories, such as widows of ex-servicemen and disabled ex-servicemen injured during wars. However, Finance Minister Thangam Tennarasu, during the presentation of the Tamil Nadu government’s budget on February 19, announced the extension of the property tax refund scheme to all ex-servicemen in the state. The budget note highlighted the expected benefits for over 1.2 lakh ex-servicemen in Tamil Nadu, signaling the government’s commitment to supporting veterans and recognizing their contributions to the nation’s defense. Following through on the budget announcement, the Tamil Nadu government promptly issued the ordinance exempting ex-servicemen from property and house taxes. This proactive measure underscores the government’s resolve to prioritize the welfare of ex-servicemen and honor their service to the nation.
